Best Thesaurus—Word Hippo
Word Hippo offers a host of valuable characteristics (See blog post Thesaurus Aren’t Created Equal—Overview) a writer needs to find the best opposite word (Antonym) or replacement word (Synonym). This thesaurus supports all genres; it’s a single source for thousands of words listed in contextual categories. Many words fall into a single part of speech—noun, pronoun, adjective, article, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, number, and interjection—but some are in two or three. Hippo lists antonyms and synonyms for each part of speech in contextual categories. The following examples of the listings illustrate the depth of information for five words:
Rather appears in the following parts of speech: adverb, verb, conjunction, and interjection.
Than shows up as a preposition.
He as a noun and pronoun.
Charge as a noun and verb.
Five as an adjective, noun, and numeral.

The following image shows the display for synonyms of Charge in the verb and noun parts of speech.
Select the Synonyms tab and type in the word Charge in either the What’s another word for search bar at the top or the Find Synonyms box in the right sidebar. Click find it or go to display synonyms. The screen fills with the image above. Scan through the similar words in several contextual categories for both the verb and noun forms.
Check out the example sentences under each contextual group in each part of speech. The more > button under that contextual listing shows that additional words are available. Click the speaker symbol to hear the pronunciation. A right-click on the speaker icon provides the option to generate a QR code (Quick Response code). This is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) for the word. The synonym context description list expands with the down arrow in the lower right corner. Expand both to see 33 verb contexts for Charge and 45 noun contexts for the word. Clicking on a context line jumps the display to the list of words for that context.
With Charge in the search bar, click on the Antonyms tab. Word Hippo finds opposite words for Charge in many contexts and two parts of speech.
A unique application feature, one not found in most other thesauruses, allows for the search of multi-word entries. For example, if To Fat is entered, Word Hippo returns thousands of synonyms and antonyms in numerous contexts with adjective and noun parts of speech.
With Charge in the search bar, click on the Definitions tab. The application displays Dictionary Definitions for Charge with the context inside the parenthesis and in two parts of speech.
Click any synonym or antonym word for Charge. Observe how the application puts that new word into the search bar and displays synonym or antonym word choices for the new word. Click the browser’s back arrow and return the search to Charge.
With Charge in the search bar, click on the Sentences tab. Check Word Hippo’s sample sentence display using the search word. The Show More Sentences button at the bottom of the display provides additional examples.
Poets find the Rhyming tab useful. With Charge in the search bar, click on the Rhyming tab. Hippo shows thousands of rhyming words and word groups. A filter adjusts the display for rhymes from one to seven syllables. The list includes many multi-word rhymes, especially with a high number of syllables.
The Translation tab translates between English and most world languages. Select From English, and enter a word into the search bar. In the To box pick a foreign language and click the Translate button. See the display of multiple translations in context.
The Find Words tab searches for words based on word length and the word’s use. The following figures illustrate how this feature works. Writers find this tab useful when they look for a word but are unsure of spelling. Two of the options sharpen word game skills.

The Word Forms tab displays synonyms for the different forms of a word. The following figures illustrate how this feature works. With Charge in the search bar, click on the Word Forms tab then cycle through the eight options. Check the way Hippo generates synonyms in different form, tense, and number.
